Scarlet news blows my mind

Posted by Jason on November 13th, 2008

I haven’t gone to sleep yet. I’m tired, kind of hungry, and I feel like I need to take a shower. But the news coming out about Scarlet (and Epic) from RED is making me giddy. I’m so excited.

I’m sure I’ll collect more information as the day goes on, but right now this is what’s got me so worked up.

  • Modular design allows for infinite upgradability
  • Price point (for the base) is less than $3,000
  • The smallest Scarlets will do 120fps
  • Interchangeable lenses for most Scarlet models
  • You can make the camera be whatever you want

Besides the whole shooting in 3D thing they teased at the bottom of the brochure, what’s really got my mind in a knot is the announced 28K (!) RED Epic 617. It has a sensor that’s 186 x 56mm. For comparison, my DVX100a has three 1/3in sensors. A single sensor of this size is about the size of my hand.

Label my mind: blown.

I can’t even imagine what somebody would do with an image that large. Or where they’d store more than a few seconds of it. Yikes.

Now what I’m interested in is the lens pricing for the 2/3in mini-RED Primes. I’d also like to know if it’ll be possible to get the 2/3in Scarlet, but with a Nikon or Canon lens mount instead of the mini-RED mount.

You know, I distinctly remember a Nikon lens being on the RED camera that I saw at Pop!Tech.

This is awesome. Looks like it’s time for you to save up for a camera :) .

@Jermaine I have plenty of time to do it too — they aren’t due to start shipping until late 2009. And even that’s not guaranteed.

@Erik RED does provide lens mounts for Nikon and Canon, and the two larger Scarlet models give you that option. But the smallest Scarlet model that still allows removable lenses uses a system they’re calling mini-RED that works with their new selection of prime lenses.

The pictures they provided makes it look like the whole lens adapter could be replaced with whatever you want, so I’m thinking you could probably use one of the Nikon or Canon mounts.

Also, I’m really jealous that you got to see the RED One in person. Just saying. :)

@Jason – hah. I was also interviewed on it, so I’ll shoot you the link once it goes live. :)

By the way, Chase Jarvis has a write-up on this too, you can see it here:
